Marion County Volunteer Adult Guardianship Program

Volunteer Guardians are legally appointed guardians for incompetent adults (wards). The guardians act in the best interest of the ward as an advocate and substitute decision-maker in the care and management of medical and personal affairs.
Volunteering to help care for our community’s vulnerable citizens is one of the most rewarding ways that we can make positive changes in Marion. The Court will stand with you as you help to ensure that our vulnerable neighbors are treated with dignity and respect. We will be here to answer any questions, provide training and guide you through the process.

Who Will You Be Helping?
- Anyone over the age of 18 that also meets one of more of the following criteria
- In Long-Term placement
- Has no other family that can help
- Cannot make decisions for themselves
- May have Dementia or an Intellectual Disability
Requirements of Volunteer Guardians- Make at least one monthly contact with their ward, service providers, and family members to make decisions about appropriate living arrangements, medical care, and other personal matters;
- Complete Annual trainings;
- Attend Court hearings and follow the Oath of Guardianship; and
- Submit the Guardian’s Report and Statement of Expert Evaluation every year.
How to Become a Volunteer Guardian- To become a Volunteer Guardian:

You must be 21 years of age or older;- Complete an application and background check;
- Interview with Court Staff; and
- Have a valid Ohio driver’s license and access to an automobile.
